Alarm Installation covers the supply and fitting of a new intruder alarm: control panel, keypad or app, detectors, siren, backup battery and a communicator if you want monitoring or phone alerts. It suits homeowners, landlords and businesses without a working alarm, or with one too old to repair.
- Say what property you have and how many rooms, doors and outbuildings need protection.
- Say whether you want wired, wireless or a mix.
- Mention any existing equipment, cabling or armed response contract.
Describe your property once and compare quotes from alarm installers.

1. Site assessment
The installer walks the property, checks entry points, ceiling and cable routes, mains power near the panel position, Wi-Fi or cellular signal, and how you use the house or premises. Many installers quote only after this visit.
2. System design and zones
A zone is one detector or group of detectors the panel reports separately, such as "kitchen PIR" or "garage door". Good zoning tells you or the control room exactly where a trigger happened. The installer also sets partitions or stay modes so part of the property can be armed while you are home.
3. Detector placement
- Passive infrared (PIR) detectors in rooms and passages intruders must cross.
- Magnetic contacts on doors, garage doors and opening windows.
- Pet-tolerant detectors where dogs or cats move around inside.
- Outdoor detectors or beams only where they suit the layout. See outdoor beams installation.
4. Installation and programming
Cabling or wireless pairing, mounting the panel in a protected position, fitting the siren, connecting the backup battery, then programming zones, entry and exit delays, user codes and any communicator.
5. Testing and handover
Every detector is walk-tested, the siren and battery are checked, and signals are tested to the control room or app if connected. You should be shown how to arm, disarm, use stay mode and bypass a faulty zone, and receive a zone list.
Wired, Wireless or Hybrid
| Option | Suits | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | New builds, renovations, ceilings with easy cable routes | Most labour on day one. Detectors run off the panel power and battery. |
| Wireless | Finished homes, rentals, double-storeys, face-brick walls | Detector batteries need replacing. Signal range depends on walls and layout. |
| Hybrid | Existing wired systems that need extra zones | Panel or receiver must support both. Common when adding outbuildings. |
More detail on cordless systems is on the wireless alarm systems page.
Common Situations
- A new home or office with no alarm.
- An old alarm with obsolete parts, see alarm system upgrades first if some equipment still works.
- After a break-in, to close gaps the old system missed.
- An insurer asking for a working alarm with monitoring.

Alarm Installation FAQs
How long does an alarm installation take?
A small wireless home system can be done in a few hours. Wired systems in larger homes or businesses can take one to two days, depending on cable routes.
Do I need a site visit before a quote?
Usually. A desktop estimate is possible for simple wireless kits, but cable routes, signal strength and zone count are best checked on site.
Can my existing detectors be reused?
Sometimes. Compatible wired detectors in good condition can often be connected to a new panel. Ask the installer to list what is reused and what is replaced.
Is monitoring included in an installation quote?
Not normally. Monitoring and armed response are separate monthly services. See alarm monitoring.
What warranty should I expect?
Warranty terms differ by installer and equipment brand. Ask for workmanship and equipment warranty periods in writing.
