Wireless Alarm Systems for Homes & Businesses

Get the best quote
Leaderr approved Wireless Alarm Systems - two technicians in black uniforms mounting outdoor security equipment on the wall of a white South African home, one on a ladder with a drill and one holding a cable reel

Wireless Alarm Systems use battery-powered detectors that talk to the panel or hub by radio instead of cable. They suit finished homes, rentals, double-storeys and buildings where running cable is difficult or messy.

  • Describe the layout: single or double-storey, wall types, distance to outbuildings.
  • Say whether you want app control.
  • Mention any existing wired system.

Describe your property once and compare wireless alarm quotes.

How Wireless Alarms Work

Each detector sends an encrypted radio signal to the hub when it triggers, and regular check-in signals so the hub knows it is still working. The hub itself runs on mains power with a backup battery, and reports to your phone or a control room over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a SIM card, depending on the model.

Practical Considerations

Detector batteries

Wireless detectors run on their own batteries. Manufacturers quote battery life in years, but real life depends on how often the detector triggers, the temperature and signal strength. The system should warn you of a low battery before it goes flat.

Signal range and layout

Range claims are for open space. Concrete slabs, face-brick, metal roofs, foil insulation and mirrors all reduce range. A signal test during installation shows whether a repeater or range extender is needed.

Power and maintenance

Wireless does not mean maintenance-free. The hub still needs mains power and a backup battery, detectors need battery changes, and outdoor units need cleaning. See alarm maintenance.

Installation

Installation is quicker and cleaner than wired, but detectors still need correct mounting height, angle and placement away from heaters, windows facing the sun and moving curtains.

Some guide figures come from installer marketing pages and are less reliable than retailer prices. Confirm whether VAT is included on every quote.

What Affects the Cost

  • Brand and hub model.
  • Number of detectors and door contacts.
  • Outdoor wireless detectors, which cost more.
  • Range extenders for large or double-storey homes.
  • SIM data or app subscriptions, where applicable.

Compare against wired systems on the alarm system prices guide.

What to Include in Your Request

  • Town or suburb.
  • Property type, number of storeys and wall construction.
  • Number of rooms, outside doors and outbuildings.
  • Pets inside at night.
  • Preferred brand, if any.
  • Never send alarm codes, app passwords or master PINs in a quote request. A provider will set or change these with you on site.

How the Enquiry Works

  1. Request. Describe the layout and what to protect.
  2. Match. Independent installers that may serve your area can respond.
  3. Signal check. A good installer tests signal strength before finalising the quote.
  4. Compare. Check brand, detector count and battery replacement costs.
  5. Choose. Appoint an installer, or nobody.

Request quotes from providers serving your area. Availability depends on your location and service requirements.

You can also compare wired and hybrid options from the same request on Alarm Systems South Africa.

Wireless Alarm FAQs

Do wireless alarms work during load-shedding?

The hub runs on its backup battery and detectors on their own batteries. How long it lasts depends on the hub, battery and communicator, so ask the installer.

How often do wireless detector batteries need replacing?

It depends on the model and use. Manufacturers quote years, but busy or outdoor detectors drain faster. The system should report low batteries.

Can wireless signals be jammed?

Modern systems use encryption and some detect jamming and report it. Ask installers what the specific system does.

Is wireless less reliable than wired?

Not necessarily, if the signal is tested and batteries are maintained. Wired avoids battery changes and radio range limits.

Can I add wireless detectors to a wired alarm?

Often, with a wireless receiver that suits the panel. See alarm system upgrades.
