Alarm System Upgrades improve an alarm you already have instead of starting again: a new panel, more zones, outdoor protection or smartphone control, while keeping equipment that still works. It suits older systems, renovated properties and owners who want app control or better perimeter detection.
- List what works now and what you want added.
- Give the panel and keypad brand if you can.
- Say whether the system is monitored.
Describe your current alarm once and compare upgrade quotes.

Keep compatible equipment
Wired detectors, door contacts, sirens and cabling in good condition can often be connected to a new panel. The installer should test each one and list what is reused.
Replace an old panel
Panels that no longer get parts or support, or that cannot take a modern communicator, are the usual weak point. A new panel can keep the existing wiring.
Expand zones
Extra rooms, a flatlet, garage or outbuilding usually need more zones. This may mean a zone expander, a wireless receiver or a larger panel.
Add outdoor protection
Outdoor detectors or beams give earlier warning, before someone reaches a door or window. See outdoor beams installation.
Enable smartphone control
An app module or a new app-ready panel lets you arm, disarm and get notifications remotely. On many existing panels this is done with a module such as Olarm, if the panel is compatible. More options are on smart alarm systems.

| Need a few more zones | Zone expander or wireless receiver |

What Affects the Cost
- Whether the existing panel can be kept.
- How many detectors are reused.
- Number of new zones and outdoor detectors.
- App modules and any subscription.
- Reprogramming if installer codes are unknown.
See the alarm system prices guide for more detail.
What to Include in Your Request
- Town or suburb and property type.
- Panel and keypad brand, and a photo if the form allows it.
- Which areas are protected now.
- What you want: app control, outdoor detection, more zones or a new panel.
- Whether the installer code is known.
- Never send alarm codes, app passwords or master PINs in a quote request. A provider will set or change these with you on site.
How the Enquiry Works
- Describe. Send what you have and what you want.
- Match. Independent installers that may serve your area can respond.
- Inspect. Most installers test the existing equipment before quoting.
- Compare. Check what is reused versus replaced in each quote.
- Decide. Accept a quote or none.
Request quotes from providers serving your area. Availability depends on your location and service requirements.

Alarm System Upgrade FAQs
Can I add app control to my old alarm?
Often, if the panel is supported by an app module. Some older panels are not, in which case a new panel is needed.
Can wired and wireless detectors be mixed?
Yes, on panels that support a wireless receiver or are hybrid by design.
Will an upgrade change my monitoring?
It can. A new panel or communicator must be set up to report to your control room, so tell your monitoring provider.
Do I lose my zones when the panel is replaced?
Zones are reprogrammed on the new panel. Ask for an updated zone list at handover.
Is an upgrade cheaper than a new system?
Usually, when the wiring and most detectors can be kept. If little can be reused, a new installation may cost about the same.
