Alarm Repairs for Faulty Security Systems

Get the best quote
Leaderr approved Alarm Repairs - two technicians in black uniforms mounting outdoor security equipment on the wall of a white South African home, one on a ladder with a drill and one holding a cable reel

Alarm Repairs is fault finding and fixing on an existing alarm: false alarms, dead keypads, zones that will not clear, sirens that stay quiet and panels that stop reporting to the control room. It suits anyone with a system that is installed but not working properly.

  • Note what the keypad or app shows, such as a zone number, "AC fail" or "comms fail".
  • Say when the fault started and whether it happens at a set time.
  • Give the brand on the keypad or panel if you can see it.

Describe the fault once and compare quotes from alarm technicians.

Faults Technicians Repair

FaultCommon causes
False alarmsInsects or spiders in detectors, pets, curtains moving in drafts, poorly placed outdoor sensors, a faulty door contact
Faulty detectorsAge, moisture, lightning damage, flat batteries in wireless units
Keypad problemsDamaged keypad, cable fault, power supply problem, lost communication with the panel
Communication failuresExpired SIM or airtime, Wi-Fi changes, faulty GSM or IP module, weak signal
Damaged wiringRodents in the ceiling, renovations, water ingress, cut cables
Siren faultsBlown fuse, failed siren, siren tamper fault, flat siren battery
Power issuesFailed backup battery, blown transformer, mains supply fault, load-shedding damage

Battery-related faults have their own page: alarm battery replacement.

What a Repair Visit Includes

  • Reading the panel event log to see which zone or fault was reported and when.
  • Testing detectors, contacts, siren and keypad.
  • Measuring battery and power supply voltage.
  • Checking communicator signal and test signals to the control room.
  • Replacing faulty parts, with your approval of the cost.
  • A final walk test.

A technician should never ask you to send codes in advance or leave the system permanently bypassed. If a zone has to be bypassed until a part arrives, agree how long and how the rest of the property stays protected.

Repair or Replace?

Repair is normally sensible when one part has failed. Replacement or an alarm system upgrade makes more sense when the panel is no longer supported, parts are hard to find, or faults keep returning after repairs.

Some guide figures come from installer marketing pages and are less reliable than retailer prices. Confirm whether VAT is included on every quote.

  • After-hours or weekend call-outs.
  • Ceiling access for wiring faults.

What to Include in Your Request

  • Town or suburb.
  • Property type.
  • Alarm brand, if known.
  • The fault and any message on the keypad or app.

  • Never send alarm codes, app passwords or master PINs in a quote request. A provider will set or change these with you on site.

How the Enquiry Works

  1. Describe the fault. Send what you see and when it happens.
  2. Match. Independent technicians that may cover your area receive the enquiry.
  3. Call-out quote. Most quote a call-out fee plus labour and parts.
  4. Diagnose. The technician confirms the fault and the repair price on site.
  5. Approve. You approve parts before they are fitted.

Request quotes from providers serving your area. Availability depends on your location and service requirements.

If your armed response company maintains the alarm, check your contract before calling anyone else. For independent technicians, use Alarm Systems South Africa to compare repair quotes.

Alarm Repair FAQs

Why does my alarm go off at night for no reason?

Common causes are insects in a detector, pets, moving curtains, a loose door contact or an outdoor sensor picking up plants. The event log shows which zone triggered, which narrows it down.

My keypad shows a battery fault. Is that a repair?

Usually the backup battery needs replacing. If a new battery still shows a fault, the charging circuit or transformer may need checking.

Can any technician repair any alarm brand?

Most technicians work on the common South African brands, but some panels need specific software or installer codes. Say the brand in your request.

What if the installer code is unknown?

Some panels can be defaulted, which wipes programming. The technician should explain this and the reprogramming cost before doing it.

Is the quote form an emergency service?

No. If you have an emergency, contact your armed response provider or SAPS on 10111.
