Alarm Monitoring means your alarm sends its signals to a monitoring centre (control room) that watches them around the clock and acts on them: phoning you, your contacts or a response team. It is a monthly service from a security company, separate from buying or installing the alarm.
- Say what alarm you have and whether it has a communicator.
- Say whether you want monitoring only or monitoring with armed response.
- Give your town or suburb so local providers can respond.
Describe your alarm once and compare monitoring options.
Compare Alarm Monitoring OptionsHow Signals Reach the Monitoring Centre
- A zone triggers, or a fault occurs such as power failure or low battery.
- The panel's communicator sends a coded signal over radio, GSM/SIM or the internet.
- The control room receives the signal with your account number and the zone.
- The operator follows your agreed escalation procedure.
Communication Options
| Path | Notes |
|---|---|
| Radio | Common with South African response companies. Usually needs the company's own transmitter. |
| GSM or cellular | Uses a SIM card. Depends on signal and the network technology the module supports. |
| Internet (IP) | Uses your fibre or Wi-Fi. Fails if the router loses power unless it has backup. |
| Dual path | Two methods together, so one failure does not cut you off. |
Escalation Procedures
Agree in writing what happens for each signal type: who is called and in what order, when a guard is dispatched, what happens after hours, and the password used to confirm a false alarm. Keep your contact list up to date.
Monitoring, Armed Response and Self-Monitoring
| Service | Who watches | Who goes |
|---|---|---|
| Self-monitoring | You, through an app or SMS | Nobody unless you arrange it |
| Monitoring only | A control room | The control room calls you, your contacts or SAPS |
| Monitoring with armed response | A control room | A response officer is dispatched |
Response is covered on the armed response page and app-based alerts on smart alarm systems.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Compiled from prices published by South African suppliers, retailers, installers and security companies, checked October 2026 and rounded. They are not our prices and no provider is bound by them. Equipment-only prices exclude installation. Some guide figures come from installer marketing pages and are less reliable than retailer prices. Confirm whether VAT is included on every quote.

Alarm Monitoring FAQs
Is monitoring the same as armed response?
No. Monitoring is the control room receiving and handling signals. Armed response is a guard being sent. Many companies sell both together.
Can my existing alarm be monitored?
Usually, if it has or can take a compatible communicator. The provider will check.
Will I pay extra for false alarms?
Some companies charge after a set number of false alarms. Check the contract.
Can I switch monitoring companies?
Yes, subject to your current contract notice period. The new provider may need to reprogram or replace the communicator.
Does an app replace monitoring?
An app lets you self-monitor, but nobody else watches the signals or acts if you miss an alert.
