Smart Alarm Systems let you arm, disarm and check your alarm from a smartphone app, and send notifications when a zone triggers, the power fails or someone disarms. You can get one as a new app-ready system, or by adding a compatible module to an existing panel.
- Say whether you want a new system or app control on your current alarm.
- Give the existing panel brand, if any.
- Say whether the property has reliable Wi-Fi, fibre or cellular signal.
Describe your alarm once and compare smart alarm quotes.

Two Ways to Get App Control
New app-ready system
Systems such as Ajax and Hikvision AX PRO are built around an app. Detectors pair to a hub that connects to the internet.
Module on an existing panel
A communicator such as Olarm, or the panel maker's own IP or GSM module, connects a conventional panel to an app. Compatibility depends on the panel brand and model, so not every alarm can be converted.
Connectivity and Its Limits
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet: cheap to run, but stops when the router or fibre is down unless the router has backup power.
- SIM card (2G, 3G, 4G): works without your internet, but needs signal and data. Older 2G and 3G-only devices are at risk as networks change.
- Dual path: Wi-Fi plus SIM keeps the app working if one path fails.
- Load-shedding: the alarm runs on its battery, but your router and the local cell tower may not. Ask how the system behaves when both are down.
An app tells you something happened. It does not send anyone. If you want a guard to respond, you still need a monitoring or armed response arrangement.
Subscriptions
Some smart alarms charge a monthly or annual app subscription, others do not, and SIM-based devices need data. Ask each installer for the total yearly running cost, not only the equipment price.

What Affects the Cost
- Module on an existing panel versus a new system.
- Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi plus SIM.
- App subscription, if charged.
- Number of detectors and users.
- Programming time on older panels.

What to Include in Your Request
- Town or suburb and property type.
- Existing alarm brand and model, if you have one.
- Internet type and whether the router has backup power.
- How many people need app access.
- Never send alarm codes, app passwords or master PINs in a quote request. A provider will set or change these with you on site.
How the Enquiry Works
- Request. Say what you have and what you want the app to do.
- Match. Independent installers that may serve your area can respond.
- Compatibility check. The installer confirms your panel works with the chosen module, or quotes a new system.
- Compare. Check equipment, installation and yearly running costs.
- Set up. The installer configures the app with you on site.
Request quotes from providers serving your area. Availability depends on your location and service requirements.

Smart Alarm FAQs
Can I control my old alarm from my phone?
If the panel is supported by an app module, yes. Some older or less common panels are not, and need replacing first.
Does a smart alarm work without internet?
The alarm still detects and sounds the siren. App control and notifications need a working Wi-Fi or SIM connection.
Will the app call armed response?
Not by itself. Some apps can link to a response provider, but you need a separate agreement with that provider.
Can I give my domestic worker app access?
Yes, on most systems, often limited to certain areas or times. You can remove access at any time.
Is there a monthly fee?
It depends on the brand. Some charge an app subscription and SIM devices need data. Ask for yearly running costs.
